Kalabagh Dam causes furore in NA

By Tahir Niaz

ISLAMABAD: The demand for the construction of Kalabagh Dam in the National Assembly on Tuesday saw the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and PML-Quaid (PML-Q) team-up against the Awami National Party (ANP), in a test of parliamentary support for and against the controversial project.

The two opposing groups launched a full-blown verbal clash until PML-N’s Sheikh Asghar asked the senators to come up with solid arguments on the issue instead of opposing for sake of opposing.

The clash between the two groups started when PML-Q’s Bushra Rehman said the Kalabagh Dam was the need of the hour. Sooner or later, she said, the dam would have to be built in the larger interest of Pakistan. Bushra’s statements earned an aggressive response from the ANP members, thus setting the platform for a full-scale sloganeering. The majority of PPP legislators tried to pacify the two groups, while the MQM senators steered clear of the ongoing ‘political theatre’.
