Reconciliation only way to move ahead: Zardari
* President says no one will be allowed to disrupt peace in Karachi
* Local government polls will be held on time
KARACHI\LAHORE: Benazir Bhutto had a vision for reconciliation and the government wants to move forward with all parties in line with her policy, President Asif Ali Zardari said on Wednesday.
Talking to reporters at the Bilawal House, Zardari said, “We want to move forward with all parties having the same vision. The problems faced by the country have not originated in the past two and a half years, still we are managing to resolve them,” he said.
President Zardari said he was striving to eradicate terrorism from the country but the effort demanded national unity.
The president added certain elements were raising objections over the issues of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the 18th Amendment, “whereas the government took important decisions during disagreements”.
Zardari said he had not been recognised as a political prisoner during eight years of imprisonment, whereas Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif was declared a political prisoner as soon as he was detained by former president Pervez Musharraf.
Earlier, the president met various delegations at the Bilawal House, including those from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F), the Awami National Party (ANP), as well as office bearers and members of the governing bodies of the Karachi Press Club (KPC) and Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ).
Zardari told the delegations that no one would be allowed to disrupt peace in Karachi and tough action would be taken to stop target killings in the city.
The president also assured the ANP and PML-F delegations of looking into the matter of constituencies in Karachi. Zardari said the PPP and the PML-F would make seat adjustment in the local bodies elections, adding that the polls would be held on time. staff report\ daily times monitor
