PPP not to field candidate if Nawaz contests by-polls, says Babar Awan

MULTAN: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) will not field a candidate against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif if he decides to contest the by-elections, Law Minister Babar Awan said on Friday

“We will not field any candidate against Nawaz Sharif in accordance with the spirit of the Charter of Democracy,” Awan added.

Addressing a press conference at the local airport, he said the disqualification case “had already been decided, and Nawaz Sharif is a senior politician and should contest the elections, and become a part of the National Assembly”.

Awan said the PPP-led government had revised the formula for the distribution of resources, for the first time in Pakistan’s history.

“It paved the way for huge allocation of resources for the Seraiki areas. The provinces’ allocation for development was larger than the centre, by virtue of the recent National Finance Commission (NFC) Award,” he added.

Addressing a gathering of lawyers representing various bar associations of south Punjab at the local circuit house, Awan said the government wished to convene the maiden meeting of the judicial commission soon, however, it would be held after the court decision on the petitions challenging provisions of the 18th Amendment. app
