Nation pays tributes to the Daughter of the East
* Benazir Bhutto remembered all across the country
* Leaders, masses conduct Quran khawani, offer fateha
* PPP sets up blood donation camps in different cities
ISLAMABAD/PESHAWAR: The 57th birth-anniversary of former prime minister and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairperson Benazir Bhutto was observed across the country on Monday.
The day dawned with Quran khawani at the mausoleum of the Bhuttos in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh in Sindh. A police contingent presented a guard of honour.
Quran khawani was also held elsewhere in the country. Floral wreaths were laid on her grave and also at her memorial in Rawalpindi where she was attacked on December 27, 2007.
Besides the family members of Bhutto, PPP leaders, office bearers and thousands of party workers thronged her grave to offer fateha.
The PPP had set up blood donation camps in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh where elected representatives, workers and the general public donated blood as a mark of respect for Bhutto.
In Rawalpindi, over 160 leaders and workers donated blood at Liaquat Bagh – the place where Bhutto was assassinated. In the federal capital, Allama Iqbal Open University marked the birth anniversary of Bhutto.
In Karachi, Fehmida Mirza, speaker of the National Assembly, cut a cake to celebrate the birth anniversary of Bhutto. The programme was organized by the PPP Sindh media cell.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, thousands of PPP workers turned up at blood donation camps established in all districts, to pay tribute to the slain leader.
Three blood donation camps were established at the Lady Reading Hospital under the auspices of the Peoples’ Doctors Forum. In Quetta, the Balochistan cabinet paid tributes to the slain PPP chairperson for her unprecedented sacrifices for the revival of democracy in the country. In Naudero, PPP’s central information secretary, Fauzia Wahab, visited the grave of Bhutto, offered fateha and placed a floral wreath.
She also visited the graves of PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Mir Murtaza and Shahnawaz.
The birth anniversary of Bhutto was observed in Diamer. In this regard a ceremony was held here at Inter College Hall.
People in Lahore observed the birth anniversary of the late PPP leader by organizing blood camps.
Minister for Labour and Manpower, Syed Khurshid Ahmad Shah, said that democracy and the judiciary in the country existed because of the National Reconciliation Ordinance. Addressing an award distribution ceremony among the workers, the minister said that during the last two years of a PPP-led government, no political worker had been victimised anywhere in the country. The birth anniversary of Bhutto was observed across Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Quran khawani was held for the departed soul in different ceremonies. Senior leaders of the PPP, including members of AJK Legislative Assembly and the AJK Council and office-bearers of the party attended the ceremonies.
Also on Monday, the 57th birth anniversary of Bhutto was celebrated in the South Waziristan, Kurram and Bajaur agencies. A major function was held at Kot Barki in South Waziristan Agency in this regard, where PPP leaders and workers cut a cake.
At People’s House at Parachinar in Kurram Agency, blood donation camps were held where the area’s PPP party secretary Hamid Hussain Turi, Liaq Turi and other workers and leaders cut her birthday cake and donated blood to pay homage to the world’s first Muslim female prime minister.
Similarly, a function was also held at Bajaur Agency’s headquarter Khar, where PPP Bajaur president Aurangzaib Khan donated blood along with other leaders of the PPP. They said Benazir’s sacrifice would not go to waste and her killers would soon be exposed. app
