Rehman Malik challenges his conviction in SC

ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Tuesday filed a petition in the Supreme Court, challenging an earlier decision of the Lahore High Court (LHC) over his conviction in two National Accountability Bureau (NAB) references. Rehman Malik has filed the petition through his counsel, Ali Zafar, asking the apex court to set aside the LHC’s May 15, 2010 order, which had upheld his conviction in two NAB references. In 2004, a Rawalpindi accountability court sentenced Malik to a three-years imprisonment in two cases after he failed to appear before the court. In 2010, Rehman Malik moved the Lahore High Court against the conviction. The LHC bench comprising Chief Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif and Justice Waqar Hassan Mir rejected Rehman Malik’s appeal for not appearing before the accountability court and upheld the sentence. However, Malik obtained pre-arrest bail from the Sindh High Court in order to avoid arrest. Later, President Asif Ali Zardari granted him pardon using his discretionary powers under Article 45 of the Constitution. masood rehman
