US military chief meets Zardari, air chief marshal

ISLAMABAD: US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen called on President Asif Ali Zardari at the Presidency on Saturday.

Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani and US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne Patterson were also present. The admiral praised Pakistan’s efforts to confront violent extremists and honored the sacrifices made by the security forces and citizens in their fight to restore peace and stability.

Ahead of Mullen’s visit, the chief of staff of the US air force, General Norton Schwartz visited Pakistan’s air force headquarters, a statement by the US embassy said.

Mullen also met Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman. The admiral praised Pakistan’s efforts to confront violent extremism and the sacrifices being made by the country’s security forces and citizens in the fight to restore peace and stability. Mullen reaffirmed the US commitment to building a long-term strategic partnership with Pakistan and assured the air chief marshal that Gen Stanley McChrystal’s ouster would not affect the US strategy in Afghanistan.
