Practicing lawyers urged to use simple names

ISLAMABAD: Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan warned practicing lawyers against using prefixes or suffixes like judge, former Attorney General or former Advocate General with their names, Geo News reported Tuesday.

Disciplinary action would be taken against the lawyers who are found violating the directives.

According to a statement, the decision was made in a meeting of National Judicial Policymaking Committee.

This was brought to the notice of the meeting that some lawyers in a bid to woo more clients and attract cases, employ with their names suffixes and prefixes like Justice (retired), former Attorney General or former Advocate General; however, this is banned under laws of Pakistan Legal Practitioners and Bar Council.

It was further noted that there were people who were promoted to High Court with their appointment not confirmed; and later on as a result of Supreme Court (SC) ruling on July 31, 2009, these appointments were annulled.

However, these people continued to write ‘former judge’ with their names, which stands in conflict with the rules and these people should give up this practice forthwith.

Print and electronic media have also been cautioned to avoid the same practice in using the names of these people.
