Abbottabad commission ‘dies out’

* Fakhruddin refuses to be part of investigative body

* Justice Javed says permission of chief justice necessary to head commission

Daily Times Monitor

LAHORE: As the government woke up to the mounting domestic and international pressure and pinned hopes on the Abbottabad commission, one of its members said he had yet to seek permission while another refused to be part of it.

These stark revelations had somewhat threatened the formation of the probe body which has been tasked with probing the events surrounding the intelligence lapses and al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden’s death.

Supreme Court’s Justice Javed Iqbal said he had no objection to heading the Abbottabad commission but he would have to seek Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s permission after receipt of the official notification. He said he was not consulted on the formation of the commission but he would accept this responsibility as a “national obligation”. He said he must serve the nation if any high-level commission “unveils the truth behind the Abbottabad episode”.

Justice retired Fakhruddin G Ibrahim, another member of the commission, refused to be part of the five-member probe body. According to sources, Ibrahim, in a letter to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, doubted his abilities.

He also said he had some reservations over the composition of the commission. He also complained that he was even informed before inclusion of his name in the commission.
