PPP will behave during Punjab budget: Gilani

MULTAN: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Saturday that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) would uphold the democratic norms and traditions during the presentation of the budget 2011-12 by the Punjab government.

In a brief talk with media here after opening newly-built Multan Railway Station and inner ring road from Bahawalpur Chowk to Vehari Chowk in Multan, the prime minister said the PPP had rendered great sacrifices in the cause of democracy and would respect the democratic traditions. To a question on opposition’s attitude during the presentation of national budget 2011-12 in the National Assembly on Friday, Gilani said it was their democratic right. The PPP, said the premier, would act in accordance with the democratic norms during the budget session in the Punjab Assembly. He said Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto had rendered innumerable sacrifices for the revival of democracy and the party would not let these go waste. The new Multan Railway Station has been built at a cost of Rs 45.521 million while the four-kilometer long and 10.59 metre wide inner ring road portion from Bahawalpur Chowk to Vehari Chowk was completed at a cost of Rs 532.30 million.

Separately, addressing a public meeting in Jalalpur Pirwala, Gilani said that PPP’s political rivals should serve the people instead of misleading them. “We have set the standard of serving the people irrespective of their political affiliations,” he added. The premier said that enormity of challenges faced by the country was such that no single political party could resolve it.

Gilani said that the present government had added 2000MW power to the national grid so far and promised to increase power generation by 30 percent by the end of the five year term.

He said the PPP-led government had launched the Thar coal project, started work on the Bhasha dam and finalised an agreement with Iran to address the energy issue. He also said that the issue of creation of Seraiki province was under consideration of party’s manifesto committee. The premier said that President Asif Ali Zardari, after consulting him, had formed a manifesto committee which was considering the matter, adding that a headway was expected shortly. app
