SC orders Tori Band report be made public


ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court Monday ordered for making the Tori Band Breach Probe Commission report public, Geo News reported.

The report said that the embankments breached due to the negligence and corruption of the irrigation department, while 16 persons lost their life in floods and the economy incurred a colossal loss of Rs855 billion.

Supreme Court three-member bench headed by Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the case relating to the controversy over the breaching of embankments here today.

The final report of the judicial commission probing this matter was presented to the Supreme Court, which spans over 200 pages.

Chief Justice said that the orders relating to implementation of the recommendations of this report would be announced tomorrow.

According to the report the local influential persons have encroached thousands of acres of land in kaccha areas and Tori Band maintenance has not been done since several years. Among those directly responsible for the deluge Guddu chief engineer, in-charge XEN and their staff included, the report said.

The flood loss is estimated at 5.8 percent of total GDP and about 20 million people faced the acute shortage of food, while 3.5 children’s education and 4.5 million persons’ livelihood was hit by the floods.

The Commission has recommended that the encroachment on the banks of river should not again be allowed.
