Haideri appointed Senate opposition leader

ISLAMABAD: Senator Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri has been appointed the leader of the opposition in the Senate. A notification issued to this effect by the Senate Secretariat, read, “In pursuance of Rule-2 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate 1988, the Chairman Senate has been pleased to recognise Senator Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri as leader of the opposition in the Senate with effect from June 6”. However, senators from the opposition parties protested against the appointment of Haideri as leader of the opposition in the Upper House of parliament. The house echoed with slogans of “withdraw the fake notification” when Haideri was speaking on the budget 2011-12. As the Senate Chairman Farooq H Naek allowed the newly-appointed leader of the opposition to open debate on budget, Senator Pervaiz Rashid asked the chairman to stop Haideri from making the speech, saying he does not represent the opposition. However, Naek clarified that the appointment has been made as per rules as Haideri had more numbers with him. However, the agitating members continued making noise during the speech of Haideri. Different opposition senators, on points of order, asked the chair to withdraw Haideri’s appointment notification. They vowed to protest each time the ‘illegal’ leader of the opposition rises to speak in the house. Opening debate on budget, Haideri said the country cannot be run through taking foreign and domestic loans. He called for adopting policies that help achieve self-reliance. staff report
