KESC increases load shedding in Karachi

KARACHI: The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) claimed that constrained to a temporarily increase, the duration of load shedding in the residential and commercial areas of the city had been increased in view of the peak demand exceeding 2550 Mega Watts (MW) and minimal supply of gas, 180 MMCFD as against 230 MMCFD last June.

According to a spokesman on Wednesday, the new load shedding schedule, in the zero or low loss areas, which were usually exempted of load shedding, three cycles of one hour each were being carried out; four cycles of one and a half hours each in the medium loss areas; and, four cycles of two hours each in the high loss residential and commercial areas. Industrial areas continued to be exempted of load shedding, as were the sensitive and strategic connections and installations, he added.

The temporary increase in load shedding hours was strictly for the period when the KESC was receiving low gas supply from Sui Southern Gas Company and normal load shedding plan will return as soon as gas supply increases, or if Pakistan State Oil agreed to extend KESC’s credit limit to buy furnace oil. staff report
