Chairman Senate orders security of journalists


ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Farooq H. Naek Friday ordered Interior Minister and Home Ministers Sindh and Balochistan to provide security to the journalists who gave media coverage to Karachi and Kharotabad incidents.

"Interior Minister, Home Ministers Sindh and Balochistan should provide protection to life and property of local journalists from Karachi and Quetta and those who lodged complaints. Those issuing threats be apprehended and case be registered and report be submitted in the House before 17th of this month," he issued the ruling.

He directed Leader of the House Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari to ask Interior Minister to update the House on Monday about the Karachi incident as well as the steps taken by the Ministry on his ruling.

Earlier, journalists staged walk out from the press gallery in protest against the threats being issued to the media persons who covered the Karachi and Kharotabad incidents.

Naek asked Jahangir Badar to go to press lobby and know the reasons of walk out. PPP leader Jahangir Badar informed the House that the media persons who gave coverage to Karachi and Kharotabad incidents were receiving life threats from unknown people and numbers.

He said the media persons had sought the intervention of the Chair for security of the journalists and measures to expose those who were harassing the media. Naek express his dissatisfaction over the absence of Interior Minister from the House and questioned if the law enforcing institutions would not protect them then how the country would progress and how the voice of the people could be heard?

Raza Rabbani was also concerned over the absence of Rehman Malik and said that it was a serious issue but the interior minister did not bother to take the House into confidence. Babar Awan also requested the chair to issue his ruling and direct the concerned authorities regarding the security of journalist and common man.

Later, the Chairman Senate issued his ruling for the protection and security of the journalists and those who lodged the complaints. (APP)
