SC takes suo motu; JIT formed

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry late Thursday took suo motu notice of the murder of an unarmed youth by the Sindh Rangers in Karachi and constituted a larger bench to hear the case. A joint investigation team (JIT) was also formed by the government on the demand of the family of the youth allegedly killed by officials of the Rangers on Wednesday evening. The chief justice himself would head the five-member larger bench. In this regard notices were issued to the federal and Sindh interior secretaries, Sindh Police IG, DG rangers and other officers concerned. They have been summoned by the court today (Friday). Sarfraz Shah, 25, was killed by some officials of the Rangers deployed outside Benazir Park in Boat Basin area of Clifton. Malik said that initially the government offered a judicial inquiry but that was rejected by the family of the deceased and later a JIT was formed. “There is no doubt about the video clips and it has been totally unjustified on part of the personnel of the Rangers. But, I assure you that an FIR has been registered and law will take its own course,” said the minister. Malik also claimed that the accused (youth) was actually caught by public and handed over to the area vigilance person and later handed over to the Rangers according to information available. “He tried to loot the visitors at Benazir Park but was caught red-handed,” he pointed out. The minister said that two-pronged investigation had been launched – one on part of the law enforcers and the other on behalf of the family of the deceased – in a transparent manner without any discrimination. agencies
