Extravagant amount was spent on BB’s welcome: WikiLeaks

KARACHI: A secret cable of 2007 has revealed that then Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) chairperson Benazir Bhutto (BB) decided to come to Pakistan on October 18, 2007 because a stupendous amount had already been spent on BB’s reception.

On October 14, 2007, US Ambassador Anne Patterson wrote to Washington and told that then president Pervaiz Musharraf asked the PPP leader to revise her decision of returning to Pakistan.

BB, then met with her close allies in Dubai to discuss the idea and seriously considered about delaying her return. It was the time when Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) was hearing the cases against National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).

Pervaiz Musharraf was of the view that BB should return to Pakistan after the cases against NRO are finally over. However, referring to the meeting with Mushahid Hussain on October 13, Patterson wrote that the secretary general of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid-e-Azam (PML-Q) made it obvious that even if BB comes to Pakistan before NRO hearings are concluded, she will not be arrested.

While referring to the meetings between PPP leadership and the US political officers, Patterson added that although BB seriously considered the idea of delaying her visit, she finally resorted to come on the planned date as a colossal amount had already been spent for her welcome and the PPP supporters were enthusiastic on her arrival.
