NICL scam: SC issues contempt notices to federal secretaries

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) has issued contempt notices to three federal secretaries including Prime Minister's Principal Secretary, Federal Secretary Interior and Secretary Establishment under Section 17 of Contempt of Court law, Geo News reported.

They have been asked as to why Additional DG FIA Zafar Qureshi, who was an investigation officer in National Insurance Corporation Limited (NICL) scam, was transferred on verbal orders.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the contempt of court matter against DG FIA Malik Iqbal.

Former DG FIA Malik Iqbal was charged with contempt of court for transferring Zafar Qureshi. The verdict in this case was to be announced today. The officials have been ordered to submit their replies by June 23rd.

Interior Secretary Chaudhry Qamaruz Zaman, Establishment Division Secretary Abdul Rauf Chaudhry and Prime Minister's Principal Secretary were issued contempt notices after they failed to satisfy the apex court over transfer of Zafar Qureshi in haste and on verbal orders.

After the replies the apex court would proceed with the reserved judgment.
