Cabinet okays draft bill for election commission’s formation

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Cabinet on Wednesday approved the draft of the 20th Constitutional Amendment bill, which has been formulated in line with the directions of the Supreme Court for the formation of an election commission and the appointment of members for it.

The government recently completed the election commission when it appointed four retired judges from all the provinces for the commission.

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani chaired the cabinet meeting, which also examined and deliberated in detail on the Draft Counter-Insurgency (In Aid of Civil Power) Regulations 2011 for FATA and Provincially Administered Tribal Areas in terms of Article 247 (5) and Article 247(4), respectively. The cabinet approved the draft regulation, which would provide legal cover to actions against terrorists. It was observed that it was of paramount importance for the state to curb the activities of terrorists and bring them to justice.
