Saleem Shahzad case: Interior, Information, law secretaries put on notice
ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court has issued notices to the federal secretaries of the ministries of interior, information and law on the petition of the Pakistan Union of Journalists (PFUJ) for a probe into the slain journalist Saleem Shahzad case.
The court has also called for the record of police investigations thus far held in this murder case.
The initial hearing of the case by a three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was held this morning here. Justice Tariq Pervaiz and Justice Amir Hani were the other members of the SC bench.
PFUJ in their petition filed under Article 184 of the constitution named the federation as respondent and prayed for an order for the constitution of a high-powered enquiry commission headed by a Supreme Court Judge.
Munir A. Malik and Asma Jahangir appearing in the court on behalf of PFUJ argued that prior to the constitution of enquiry commission consultation with the CJ was imperative. They said that the record of last talks on phone of Saleem Shahzad has been erased and this could be done by a powerful agency only.
The court directed the federal capital and Punjab police IGs to depute the concerned investigation officers in the court, while the court calling for comprehensive reply from the concerned federal secretaries, adjourned the hearing until Monday.
