Youth urges devolution of powers to provinces
LAHORE: The youth of all the provinces of Pakistan have been concerned about the dire consequences, in case the devolution of the powers to the provinces is not implemented, this was stated by the Mehergarh Youth Forum on Strengthening Democracy, addressing President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday.
The forum has had a series of meetings across provinces to discuss their concerns, especially when the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) joined the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and heard rumours that Senator Raza Rabbani was leaving the Implementation Commission because of the 18th Amendment. However, the work of the commission is back on track. “We hope that the whole senior leadership of the government will back this process and no power brokers will be allowed to play games with the future of our country. We expect that the president will fully back this process and will not allow anyone to go for exceptions to ‘save’ one institution or the other,” the youth of the forum said.
“We would like to convey our resolution that was passed during the course of our meetings in order to express our point of view on this issue to the respected senior leadership of the country,” they added.
In their address to Zardari, the forum said, “We the youth of Pakistan, from all five provinces, would like to congratulate you for steering the process of devolution of powers to the provinces. We commend the commission chairman Senator Raza Rabbani, who has our trust for undertaking this responsibility.”
“We want to celebrate July 1, as the day for provincial autonomy, once all powers prescribed in the18th Amendment to the provincial governments are transferred in accordance with the deadline and in the most effective manner,” they added. pr
