Free, fair elections impossible under Zardari, says Imran
ISLAMABAD: The blatant rigging of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government is vindication of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) stand that free and fair elections under a caretaker government formed by a president who holds office of the president and co-chairperson of a party is impossible. Reacting to reports of blatant rigging in the AJK elections even by allies of the government, PTI Chairman Imran Khan, said, if people are not allowed real change through a transparent electoral process, the only other option left would be a bloody revolution with unpredictable consequences for the region and us. How could the co-chairperson of a political party that is participating in the elections be expected to set up a credible caretaker government, he questioned. The PTI chief demanded that the judiciary should intervene and play an effective role to save the country from a complete institutional collapse. He said that the higher judiciary was the only institution left that could intervene to salvage the country from the present corrupt and reckless government. It is time that the judiciary takes firm and resolute steps to implement its verdict, including the verdict by the Lahore High Court, barring the holding of two offices by Zardari. staff report
