‘No action on extradition of high-profile criminals’

KARACHI: Renowned journalist and analyst Azfar Bukhari on Sunday said that Pakistani authorities should take immediate stance for the extradition of high profile criminals in order to bring them to justice. He was addressing a seminar on Anti-Drugs Day organised by an NGO here at a local hotel.

He pointed out that the government has turned a deaf ear to the arrest and extradition of people who have been accused of heinous crimes in Pakistan and are now hiding in Western countries.

He said that the Pakistani authorities did not claim any extradition for a high profile criminal Mohammad Zafar alias Babli who was arrested in Czech Republic after his Red warrant issued by the Interpol. No arrangements were made to bring him back as 33 cases of heinous crimes including terrorism, murder and robbery awaited him here in Pakistan.

Although the Czech authorities had given a 45-day deadline for a formal extradition request to send him back to Pakistan, nobody took notice of their voice despite the passage of time and as a result he was released on June 5, he claimed.

He further revealed that the same man was also arrested in Spain last year, and due to the similar negligence of Pakistani authorities he was released after the Spanish authorities did not hear anything from Pakistan in this regard.

Bukhari said there are several other Pakistanis with similar profiles who are hiding in Western countries and these criminal elements let loose can cause great trouble for Pakistan. Although we already are famous for our traditional negligence, we should try to nip the evil in the bud, he added. staff report
