Rs 192bn for enhancing power generation

ISLAMABAD: Keeping the current treacherous situation of power crisis in view, the federal government in the federal budget 2012-13 has allocated Rs 192 billion to enhance installed power generation capacity from 23,718 megawatts (MW) to 24,822 MW through addition of 1,104 MW in the national power system during the upcoming fiscal year 2012-13. ‘Annual Plan 2012-13’ released by the Planning Commission (PC) maintained that power sector reforms covering governance, pricing and legal areas are necessary for sustainable, affordable and reliable power supply. The installed power generation capacity is planned to increase from 23,718 MW in June 2012 to 24,822 MW in June 2013 through addition of 1,104 MW in Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) system. An allocation of Rs 192 billion has been made for the energy sector for 2012-13 against expected utilisation of Rs 147 billion. The current accumulated allocation of more than Rs 192.337 billion for development of power and water sector for fiscal year 2012-13 shows 27 percent increase over the last year.
