PPP, allies devise strategy for budget session
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party and its allies met in the Committee Room of the Parliament House on Tuesday to devise a strategy for the National Assembly’s budget session. Chairing the meeting of PPP MNAs and coalition partners, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani criticised the attitude of the opposition PML-N in the budget session, saying it was a repeat of history when the opposition resorted to rowdyism and the treasury benches had to cordon off the finance minister and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto. Briefing the meeting about the salient features of the budget, Finance Minister Hafeez Shaikh said that there had been a 25% increase in the revenue collection, amounting to Rs 400 billion, as compared to the last year 2011-2012. He further said that tax relief has been proposed for the taxpayers and increase of 20% in pays and pensions for the government servants. The new budget will provide social security cover to millions of families under the BISP, for which Rs 70 billion has been proposed. staff report
