Pakistan rejects Leon Panetta's 'safe havens' statement: FO
ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office said Saturday that Pakistan strongly rejected assertions recently made by US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta regarding “safe havens” in its territory. “We strongly believe that such statements are misplaced and unhelpful in bringing about peace and stability in the region.”
According to a statement released by the Foreign Office, Leon Panetta is oversimplifying some very complex issues Pakistan is dealing with in its efforts against extremism and terrorism. These issues need to be seen in the context of overall peace and stability in Afghanistan and the border region.
Pakistan has repeatedly said it will not allow its territory to be used against any country, nor will it allow safe havens. The Foreign Office added that Pakistan was fighting against extremism and terrorism in its national interest and no one should doubt our resolve and determination in this regard. “Our sacrifices remain unparalleled and our resolve unshakable.”
The statement further said that Pakistan is following a well thought out strategy to eradicate extremism and terrorism and will follow its own timeline.
