AGP to consult agencies’ heads over Arsalan case

* Qadir hints at forming broad-based investigation team

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: In view of the Supreme Court’s June 14 order over the allegations of a deal between Malik Riaz Hussain and Dr Arsalan Iftikhar – which allegedly attempted to influence the judicial process –Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Irfan Qadir has decided to hold consultations with chiefs of various investigation agencies to probe the matter.

Earlier, on June 14, a two-member bench of the Supreme Court issued directions for action against Malik Riaz Hussain, his son in law Salman Ali Khan and Dr Arslan Iftikhar, in accordance with the law.

A press statement issued by the office of the AGP on Friday said, “In view of the expectations expressed by the Supreme Court in its judgement on June 14, I shall soon undertake the accomplishment of the desired task”.

Qadir said that he would hold meetings with the NAB chairman, law secretary, interior secretary, Federal Investigation Agency director general and Islamabad Capital Territory IGP to ensure transparent accountability to determine commission of acts (if any) of corruption or corrupt practices committed by Malik Riaz or his family, Dr Arsalan Iftikhar or his family, and Salman Ali Khan, including all other persons connected with the allegations, which might eventually be the subject of enquiry or investigation by the relevant authorities. “The purpose of these deliberations is to explore the possibility of constituting a broad-based investigation team to rule out the possibility of any influence on either side, thereby securing the ends of justice,” Qadir said.

“Hopefully, a decision in this regard shall be taken by me shortly so that the state machinery could be set in motion as per the desire of the Supreme Court”, he concluded.
