LHC seeks reply from PEMRA on action against TV anchors

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial on Monday sought a reply from Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on a petition seeking penal action against two anchorpersons of a private TV channel for conducting an allegedly planted interview of a contractor who humiliated and defamed Supreme Court and the chief justice of Pakistan.

The chief justice also accepted Electronic Media Reporters Association (EMRA) request to become a party in this case.

The chief justice issued the directions on a petition filed by one Malik Ghulam Mustafa, alleging that the two respondents anchorperson held a programme to malign judiciary.

He said off-air discussion between anchors and Malik Riaz had exposed the real hands behind it as the prime minister’s son, Abdul Qadir Gilani, had also made a phone call to one of the anchors and also talked to Malik Riaz. The petitioner termed both anchorpersons blackmailers, as they not only tried to defame the judiciary, but also harassed the nation. He requested the court to summon both anchors to unveil the real faces behind the conspiracy. staff report
