Decision is victory for rule of law

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan said the decision was a victory for the rule of law, justice and supremacy of the constitution.

It must be remembered, he said, that the decision had come on a petition filed by the PTI. The National Assembly speaker had no authority to question the decision made by the apex court, he said.

The PTI chief said the speaker’s role was simply to convey the superior court’s decision to the Election Commission of Pakistan, which she refused to do, thus creating a situation of constitutional deadlock and making it necessary for the Supreme Court to adjudicate on the matter. The obvious implication of the decision, Imran said, was that once a conviction from a court of law had attained finality, disqualification from the membership of a legislative body would be automatic. inp
