SC moved for directions to new PM over Swiss letter
Staff Report
LAHORE/KARACHI: Advocate Shahid Naseem Gondal on Saturday moved a petition before Supreme Court (SC), requesting to issue directions to Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to write a letter to Swiss authorities for reopening cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
He filed the petition before the SC Lahore Registry. The petitioner’s counsel, AK Dogar, said that the SC in its NRO judgement in 2010 had clearly directed the federal government to take immediate steps to seek revival of cases against President Zardari in Switzerland. He also said the SC had disqualified the former prime minister for not complying with the court’s judgement, adding that the new PM should learn a lesson from his predecessor and take immediate steps as directed by the apex court.
He said that the former PM had said no PPP premier would write the letter to the Swiss authorities.
Separately, a citizen submitted a constitutional petition in the Sindh High Court, requesting to direct Raja Pervez Ashraf to write a letter to the Swiss authorities for reopening of money laundering cases against President Asif Zardari. The petitioner’s counsel, Molvi Iqbal Hyder, said in Dr Mubashar Hassan case, the Supreme Court had ordered the federation, the former PM and authorities concerned to write the letter.
Hyder also said that former premier Yousaf Raza Gilani had refused to write the letter. He requested the court to issue directions to Pervez Ashraf to write to Swiss officials and if he refused then it should be taken as a violation of court orders. The petition will be heard on Monday.
