Pakistan shocked over Syria’s shooting down of Turkish aircraft

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday expressed its deep shock and regret over the shooting down of a Turkish Air Force aircraft by Syria that was reportedly unarmed and on a routine training mission.

“We express our solidarity with Turkey over this unprovoked tragic incident. We urge Syria to cooperate with Turkey in carrying out a joint investigation,” said a spokesman of the Foreign Office. He said that Pakistan desires peace and stability in this important region with due respect for international law and norms.

He said, “We urge restraint in avoidance of any action that may lead to an escalation of tensions in the region.”

The Turkish aircraft for training was shot down by Syria on June 22. Pakistan supports peaceful resolution of the Syrian issue through negotiations, the spokesman added.
