KESC deputy GM among four shot dead in Karachi wave of violence

* MQM activist among those gunned down

KARACHI: At least four people, including two Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) employees and a political party activist, were gunned down in separate acts of target killing in the city here on Tuesday.

Deputy GM of KESC’s Integrated Business Centre, North Nazimabad Syed Ali Imran Jaffrey, 39, was gunned down by two armed motorcyclists near Saifee College. Shot five times, Jaffrey succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

Sub-Inspector Mohammad Fasih Uddin said that the incident took place while Jaffrey was on his way to the office. “He belonged to the Sunni sect,” he said, adding, culprits might have taken him as Shia from his name. He however said that a personal enmity or official dispute linked to the KESC could not be ruled out.

In another incident, driver of a KESC vehicle was killed while a lineman injured when unidentified motorcyclists sprayed company’s truck near its Shamsi Society office, with bullets. According to SP Latif Siddiqui, two armed motorcyclists intercepted the truck and opened fire, killing Aman Baloch besides injuring lineman Nasir.

Separately, in Jamshed Quarters police precincts, two armed riders shot and killed owner of an auto parts shop. Terming the killing politically motivated, DSP Qaiser Ali Shah said Siraj, 55, was affiliated with Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). Tension prevailed in the area while routine and commercial activities were partially disturbed.

In another act of target killing, 32-year-old puncture repair man, also a partisan of MQM, was killed by unidentified motorcyclists at his shop situated within Surjani police precincts. SHO Shabbir Hussain that the victim was a resident of New Karachi, Sector 11-F. Police have registered an FIR (290/12) against unidentified men on the complaint of victim’s brother Fareed.

Meanwhile, three Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) activists were injured in an armed ambush near Chota Maidan within the limits of Nazimabad police station. DSP Shahid Abbas said that armed motorcyclists sprayed a car with bullets, injuring Imtiaz Khan, 35, Owais, 16 and Khan Afsar, 38. He said that all injured were PPP’s District Central workers. Conditions of the injured political activists were termed stable.
