Nawaz condemns latest drone strike

ISLAMABAD: Incoming prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday condemned the latest US drone strike in the country’s tribal belt which killed the Taliban’s deputy chief.

Nawaz expressed serious concern and deep disappointment at the drone attack carried out by the United States. A PML-N statement said the drone attack was not only a violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity but also an action that has been declared as a violation of international law and the UN charter. Nawaz’s sentiments were conveyed to the US charge d’ affaires, Ambassador Richard Hoagland, by a close aide of his, who stressed in his conversation with the US diplomat that the drone attack, coming within days of President Obama’s “crossroads” speech was highly regrettable, particularly because the president had spoken of initiating a new policy that would ensure greater exercise of care and caution in the use of this technology. Nawaz’s aide also pointed out that meaningful consultations and close cooperation between the two countries should be the desired course of action, rather than unilateral measures. staff report
