PM-in-waiting pledges zero tolerance against corruption
* PML-N formally names Nawaz Sharif as leader of the House in National Assembly
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif on Saturday made it clear that the new government would not tolerate corruption at any cost.
“We do not need to do politics for the sake of politics, rather we would have to hold the corrupt accountable. I promise that corruption would not be tolerated and I expect the same from my party colleagues,” Nawaz Sharif said in his address to the PML-N Central Parliamentary Party meeting.
The party chief said that the country needed Rs 550 billion to get rid of circular debt, without which power load shedding cannot be ended. He said that billions of rupees were being wasted due to line losses and the government would have to adopt strict and transparent policies to tackle the energy situation. He said that God wanted the PML-N to achieve gigantic tasks, and for that purpose, party members would have to rise above petty personal gains and work hard for the welfare of the nation.
“All of us would have to sacrifice our personal ambitions to ensure deliverance from debts and deficits. The PML-N has no other option but to come up to the public’s aspirations,” he said.
On the occasion, members of the meeting formally nominated Nawaz Sharif as the leader of the House in National Assembly through a resolution presented by Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, sources told Daily Times.
All PML-N parliamentarians unanimously supported the resolution during the meeting held at the Parliament House. The meeting was chaired by Nawaz Sharif and attended by PML-N members of the National Assembly.
The PML-N chief thanked the nation for allowing the party to form a government without the support of any other party. He said the new government would be facing multiple problems, and that stringent measures would have to be taken to meet the challenges. “Poor economic situation is a major cause of terrorism, poverty, unemployment and the energy crisis,” he said, adding that Pakistan would have to attain economic autonomy in order to enjoy respect among the comity of nations.
Nawaz Sharif said he was against accepting the top slot if he had to make compromises. He said he would never have opted for any compromise and he did not want premiership for his personal gains. He asked the members not to lobby for offices as God had chosen them for serving the nation.
He also pledged to carry forward the Charter of Democracy and move ahead by setting clear priorities that would help the nation reach its destination.
