Rana Iqbal elected speaker, Sher Ali deputy in PA
LAHORE: Rana Muhammad Iqbal of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PNL-N) retained the office of Speaker Punjab Assembly while Sher Ali Gorchani of the same party has been elected as his Deputy.
Rana Mashhood, deputy speaker of previous Punjab Assembly, administered the oath of Rana Muhammad Iqbal.
Rana Muhammad Iqbal was re-elected by the new assembly by securing 297 votes out of 332 while the contesting candidate Rashid Hafeez of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) received 35 votes.
The members of the provincial assembly voted through secret ballot and congratulated Rana Iqbal on being selected as speaker for the second time.
Shahbaz Sharif was the first one to cast his vote, followed by the remaining members of the assembly.
Later, voting for the deputy speaker began following the oath taking of Rana Muhammad Iqbal and after its completion PML-N’s Sher Ali Gorchani emerged as a winning candidate by obtaining 293 votes.
Speaker Punjab Assembly Rana Muhammad Iqbal administered oath to the newly elected deputy speaker Gorchani.
Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s (PML-Q) candidate Sardar Waqas Hassan Moakkal got 37 votes.
