PTI MPA gunned down in Hangu

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Fareed Khan was shot dead in his home district of Hangu on Monday, police said.

Eyewitnesses said MPA Fareed Khan was fired at by a motorcyclist in Gunjanabad area of Hangu city, and he died on the spot. Fareed’s assassination followed aerial firing in Hangu bazaar and ransacking of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazl) office by the supporters of the deceased lawmaker, and a market was ablaze, eyewitnesses said. Shah Nawaz, a friend of the slain MPA who was injured in the attack, succumbed to his wounds in the Hangu hospital, hospital sources confirmed. Meanwhile, Ayaz Khan, brother of the deceased Fareed Khan, is being treated at Hangu hospital for his bullet wounds, according to sources in Hangu District Headquarters Hospital said. “The KP Assembly member received six bullets,” hospital doctors told local media. “We are investigating the murder to ascertain who may have done this,” Hangu DPO Sajjad Khan told local media personnel at the hospital. The local administration enforced a curfew in Hangu until further orders to avoid unrest in the town after the assassination. Fareed Khan had defeated Atiqur Rehman of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl on PK-42 constituency in Hangu district as an independent candidate and later joined the ruling PTI. He was naib ameer of the Sunni Supreme Council and an active member of Shia-Sunni Jirga, which is sorting out issues between the two communities. No group has claimed responsibility for the killing of the MPA. Hangu has been witnessing Taliban-linked violence for the last many years. “It appears to be a target killing, as Hangu city had been experiencing this phenomena for quite a long time,” a senior government official told Daily Times by phone from Hangu, wishing not to be named. staff report
