Opposition extends support to Nawaz

* PPPP vows constructive opposition g PTI warns it will take government to task for misdeeds

By Tanveer Ahmad

ISLAMABAD: Congratulating Nawaz Sharif on his election as prime minister, the parliamentary leaders of various parties assured their full cooperation to the new government and vowed to stand against any adventurism to derail the democratic process.

While congratulating Nawaz, PPPP’s Makhdoom Amin Fahim quipped that apart from him, agencies should also be congratulated. However, he did not elaborate “in order to maintain conductive environment in the House”. He vowed to do constructive opposition by supporting the government on its positive works and criticise it if a wrong was done.

He claimed that the credit for Nawaz’s third premiership goes to the PPPP which removed the constitutional bar on becoming prime minister for the third time, which was introduced by former military dictator Pervez Musharraf. Commenting on the speech of Nawaz after his election, he reminded him that he had missed the Iran-Pak gas pipeline project and urged him to complete it for the sake of country.

Makhdoom Javed Hashmi of the PTI, meanwhile, said he would not do friendly opposition and take the government to task for its misdeeds. He congratulated Nawaz and said that he was his leader by virtue of being the prime minister of the country. He said the PTI would stand with the government on the issue of country’s sovereignty and called upon Nawaz to give the line of action on drone attacks that violate the country’s sovereignty.

Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai said that Nawaz should bring a soft revolution in the country. Recalling the commitments of the political forces during the previous dictatorial regime, he said that army and security agencies should be stopped from indulging in politics and stressed an independent media and judiciary. He noted that parliament is supreme and every institution is subservient to it.

Achakzai also suggested that Musharraf’s “drama” should be stopped and if anyone is interested in prosecuting him then all the abettors of the military coup and those who validated it should also be brought to justice. Dr Farooq Sattar of the MQM, JUI-F chief Fazlur Rahman, Sheikh Rasheed and others also spoke after the election of the prime minister.
