Pre-monsoon showers to subside heat wave from today

ISLAMABAD: After prolonged heat wave conditions, the long-awaited first pre-monsoon rain-spell starting from today (Wednesday), will subside the severe heat wave and decrease the temperature, according to the weather experts.

The record-breaking heat witnessed by the country during this summer has added to the woes of people already suffering from frequent power outages.

Thousands of the people visited different hilly areas, including Murree, Nathiagali, Ayubia and other popular tourist spots due to get some relief from the rising mercury during the month.

According to a spokesman of Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the first pre-monsoon weather system would grip upper and central parts of the country from Wednesday evening or night and might continue till the start of next week.

A pre-monsoon weather system, after approaching the southeastern parts of the country, is likely to spread towards the upper parts on Wednesday evening.

Under the influence of this rain bearing system, pre-monsoon rainfall started in Kashmir, northeast Punjab and southeast Sindh from Tuesday night and will extend to other parts of the country till Monday, the spokesman said.

The pre-monsoon showers with dust-thunderstorm are likely to occur in Islamabad, upper Punjab including Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Lahore divisions, Lower Sindh including Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad and Karachi divisions, southeast Balochistan, including Kalat, Makran and Naseerabad divisions and Kashmir during the next 24 hours.

The prevailing extreme heat wave is likely to subside in most parts of the country from Wednesday.

Thunderstorm-rain is also expected at scattered places in south Punjab, Upper Sindh, lower Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan during the period.

A fresh westerly wave is also expected to approach upper parts of the country on Wednesday evening or Thursday that will interact with pre-monsoon currents.

Due to this, widespread thunderstorm-rain associated with strong gusty winds and heavy to very heavy fall at isolated places is expected in Upper Punjab, Upper KP and Kashmir between Thursday-Sunday.

The spokesman said that there was high probability of early onset of monsoon rains in the country this year.
