Rains likely as monsoon system enters Sindh
By Amar Guriro
KARACHI: Causing devastating rains in Sri Lanka and southern coast of India, the pre monsoon system entered into Pakistan on Tuesday evening, prompting Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) to issue advisory of light to moderate rains in southern Sindh including Karachi and Hyderabad.
The PMD advisory predicted that due to pre monsoon system, the city will witness cloudy weather on Wednesday with possibilities of light rains in different parts of the metropolis.
Meteorologists have linked the early arrival of pre monsoon system in Pakistan with climate change and changing weather patterns and also predicted the possibilities of floods on fourth consecutive year.
“There are possibilities that monsoon will arrive before time, as the it starts in Pakistan from July 1, but due to the changing weather patterns for a last few years the monsoon has been starting early,” said Muhammad Riaz, senior meteorologist.
Pakistan witnessed history’s worst devastating flood in 2010 which is now known as super flood, which killed more than 2,200 people across Pakistan and the country estimated heavy loss which is equal to combined loss of Indonesian tsunami 2004, Kashmir earthquake 2005 and Haiti quake. In 2011, southern Sindh and the northern Sindh in 2012 witnessed heavy monsoon rains and flooding.
The met office advisory stated that first pre-monsoon weather system was likely to grip upper and central parts of the country from Wednesday evening and may continue till Monday afternoon.
