Advocate becomes party in lawyers’ torture case
* Ghuman reports receiving life threats after Musharraf’s arrest

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday admitted Advocate Aslam Ghuman’s plea to become party in the suo motu matter regarding arrest of the accused in the cases of torture and murder of the lawyers after the arrest of former army chief General (r) Pervez Musharraf.
The lawyer, who was an applicant in the judges’ detention cases, submitted an application in the Supreme Court stating that after the arrest of Musharraf he had been receiving constant life threats from Col (r) Ilyas in the form of obnoxious SMSs and personally through different persons. Ghuman stated that he as well as his family are in agony and having sleepless nights due to these continues threats by Col (r) Ilyas.
Ghuman stated in his plea that if a mishap happened with him or his family members Col Ilyas would be responsible for it. He requested the court that he should be impleaded as party in the suo moto case about the violence against lawyers in the interest of justice. Ghuman had on May 17 announced he will not pursue the case against Musharraf, who is currently under house arrest.
On August 11, 2009, an FIR was registered against Musharraf on the complaint of Ghuman. He had asked the police to initiate a case against the former military dictator for detaining over 60 judges, including Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, after he had declared emergency in the country on November 3, 2007.
