PPP calls on PML-N to tax ‘big fish’

LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has criticised the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government for a 10 percent increase in the salary of government employees, accusing the government of suffocating the poor. PPP’s central information secretary Sumsam Bokhari in a statement on Saturday said the “accumulative effect of the GST and other taxation measures would be far more cruel to offset the resultant impact on prices of eatables of daily use.” He said the government had dropped the crumb after widespread agitation across the country by government employees. He said the PPP government had increased the salaries of government employees by up to 140 percent that “not only neutralised the impact of inflation but also improved their quality of life.” He said NADRA had identified 3.8 million “big fish who did not pay taxes while their living style was luxurious by any standard,” adding that the PML-N government had failed to tax them and was minting money from the poor. pr
