Nov 3 emergency : SC moved against law minister for helping Musharraf

ISLAMABAD: A petition was moved in the Supreme Court on Monday, requesting it to restrain Zahid Hamid from working as federal law minister till the disposal of the treason case against former army chief Pervez Musharraf.

The petition stated that Zahid Hamid aided the former president impose emergency on November 3, 2007 and in his subsequent “unconstitutional and unlawful acts”. The petitioner, lawyer Sheikh Ahsanuddin, prayed that all the record in the custody of the Ministry of Law and Justice from November 3, 2007 to December 16, 2007 pertaining to the emergency be sealed and the ministry be directed to take all necessary steps and measures to keep the record intact and save it from any manipulation, tampering, change or misplacement.

The counsel also prayed, “Zahid Hamid be restrained from acting as law minister till the disposal of instant petitions, so that the new government under Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif could form an independent and fair opinion regarding trial of Pervez Musharraf and to avoid tampering of record.” Hamid was appointed as federal law minister on August 6, 2007 in the cabinet of the then prime minister Shaukat Aziz and he was the law minister at the time the unconstitutional emergency was proclaimed by Musharraf. hasnaat malik
