PM Sharif chairs high-level meeting on national security

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting between the civilian and military leadership to discuss the security situation in the country. This was the first meeting between the civilian and military leadership following a recent wave of terrorism in the country.

According to PM house sources, the meeting was attended by Army Chief General Kayani, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and the PM’s advisor on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz.

During the meeting, the participants agreed to formulate a mechanism to increase contact between intelligence agencies. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar informed Army Chief Kayani about the contradictions present in the reports of intelligence agencies regarding the incidents of terrorism in Quetta.

It was also agreed that a policy to counter terrorism would be formulated after consultations with all stakeholders. The key points of this policy were also discussed during the meeting. Sources claimed that talks with the Taliban and disgruntled Baloch leaders were also part of discussions.

The issue of drone strikes was also discussed and Prime Minister Sharif clearly stated that no compromise would be made on these attacks.
