New govt approves extra perks and privileges for top judges
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: The newly elected government of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has increased perks and privileges of superior courts’ judges by raising their daily travelling allowances as well as approving the use of two official cars for the Supreme Court’s judges.
The PML-N government has approved two-thousand rupee increase in daily travelling allowance of superior courts judges and also allowed the use of two official cars for Supreme Court judges. President Asif Ali Zardari, on the advice of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, on Tuesday approved amendment in the Supreme Court Judges (Travelling Allowance) Rules 1958 and also signed High Court Judges (Travelling Allowance) (Amendment) Order 2013 to amend the High Court Judges (Travelling Allowance) Order 1965.
Giving rationale, the summary of Law and Justice Division states that the mileage and daily allowance for the judges of the Supreme Court was last revised on June 8, 2006 and March 15, 2008, and for high courts’ judges in 2006 and 2009. It said that since the Finance Ministry had revised the mileage and daily allowance of the federal government employees on their tour or transfer with effect from July 1, 2012 and August 1, 2012 respectively, therefore in the same consideration it was necessary to increase the rates of mileage and daily allowance for the members of superior judiciary for which the Supreme Court of Pakistan had made a request.
The High Court Judges (Travelling Allowance)(Amendment) Order 2013 will come into force at once and shall be deemed to have taken effect on the first day of July 2012. Existing daily travelling allowance of SC judges is Rs 3000, which has been increased to Rs 5000. Likewise, high courts judges’ daily allowance has been increased to Rs 4000.
