Souriya Anwar honoured with Humanitarian of the Year Award

ISLAMABAD: On June 14, the Canada Pakistan Business Council (CPBC) held its 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner and Awards Night.

This year, the event was very well attended by Canadians and Pakistanis. The respectable premier of Ontario, Kathleen Wynne, attended the event as the chief guest. Also in attendance were the High Commissioner of Pakistan to Canada Akbar Zeb, Consul General of Pakistan to Canada Muhammad Nafees Zakaria, members of the Pakistan Diplomatic Corp, Canada’s Senator Salma Attaullah Jaan, Federal Secretary for Overseas Pakistanis Talat Altaf Khan and mayors of Markham, Richmond Hill and Brampton and members of the Canadian foreign and trade offices.

Each year, the CPBC takes pride in honouring distinguished individuals who have served the community and contributed to building societies. This year, it was their honour to present SOS Children’s Villages Pakistan President Souriya Anwar with the Humanitarian of the Year Award at their annual gala. This award was presented to recognise the tireless contribution made by Mrs Anwar in building the concept in 1975 into 45 thriving projects in Pakistan today, with 20 projects exclusively for orphans in need of a home and shelter.

SOS International is the largest orphan charity in the world, with active programmes and projects in 133 countries and territories of the world. The Pakistan villages are the only in the world (outside of Europe) that are completely self-financed through local endeavours. To facilitate the trip, the Pakistan International Airlines sponsored her airline ticket to Canada.

The CPBC is a non-profit organisation set up by Canadian and Pakistani businesses to promote trade between Canada and Pakistan. The CPBC is a highly reputed organisation recognised by both the governments of Canada and Pakistan. Over the last 20 years, the council has organised several trade missions, to and from Pakistan, and has many success stories under its belt. pr
