ISLAMABAD: With the country in the grips of the power crisis, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is chairing a high-level meeting on Friday to finalise the government’s energy policy.

Information Minister Parvez Rasheed said that the government was taking tangible steps for eliminating load shedding in the country. The meeting is discussing short, middle and long term polices for tackling the power crisis and these will be fine-tuned and approved.

According to sources, a reduction in the per unit price of electricity from Rs 15 to Rs 10 and an increase in production during the next two to three years has been recommended.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif presided over meeting attended by officials from the water and power ministry and other stakeholders. The prime minister during this meeting was briefed about solar energy projects in collaboration with foreign countries and other power projects such as energy generation by coal.

The prime minister said that the only solution to the energy crisis was to increase power generation by alternative sources. He also directed the water and power ministry to decrease line losses and recover outstanding amounts of electricity bills against the provinces and major organisations.
