No timeframe for targeted operation in Karachi: Qaim
KARACHI: There is no timeframe fixed for targeted operation in Karachi against outlaws and it would continue to mop up criminals and target killers.Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah appreciating overall achievements of the Karachi targeted operation said it was because of the spirit and commitment of Sindh Police and Rangers that law and order has been improved.He ruled out the impression about the changes in the police team engaged in targeted operation and said transfer of former Additional IGP Karachi Shahid Hayat was made in compliance of the Court’s orders but he assured, present team would continue operate against the criminals without any interference. Presiding over the meeting of law and order he said though the law enforcing agencies (LEAs) were fighting to terrorists with full force and commitment but net result of this fight depended on the convictions to the arrested criminals by the courts.He asked the other stakeholders, individuals and organisations also to perform at the par of LEAs to make this targeted operation as more successful.He constituted three members committee comprising provincial secretaries of Home, Law and Advocate General of Sindh to coordinate and convince the Judiciary to expedite the cases challaned under the targeted operation.Qaim said Sindh government would not allow any interference in operational working of police and police officers would be posted only on merit.Government was working to strengthen the Sindh Police and Karachi Police will continue its operational autonomy. He asked Inspector General of Sindh Police for early procurement of Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), bulletproof vehicles, waists, helmets and other equipments. He asked him to engage technocrats for implementation on the schemes of construction of residential buildings to provide housing facilities to the police officials within or near police station.Consultations to enhance the compensation to the heirs of police/Rangers martyrs were in progress to boost-up moral value of the forces. HE informed in addition to ongoing procurement of 10,000 police personnel would be inducted in the Sindh Police in the coming year while efforts were being made to institutionalise and sustain the best practices of the police.He said the budget of the Sindh Police was also being increased in next financial year 2014-15 to meet its all requirements and objectives.Inspector General of Sindh Police briefing the meeting said law and order situation was quite under control in Karachi and interior Sindh due to prompt action by Sindh Police.He said good achievements have been made in operation against dacoits and highways robberies in the interior Sindh, where abandoned check posts were being utilised.He said a gang of kidnappers has been arrested/busted and some of abductees have been recovered. The Home Secretary said a committee headed by Additional IGP Sindh has been constituted to identify the proper location for construction of check posts at all entry and exit points at Sindh’s borders and Karachi city as per decision made in earlier meeting.He said National Database Registration Authority has been approached to resolve the serious issues of aliens/illegal immigrants in Karachi who were being considered main factors of crime.Besides authorities concerned are being approached to get the illegal SIMs blocked. He said the contingency plan to stop the construction of unauthorised madaris was being prepared. The Provincial Secretary Law Mir Muhammad Shaikh briefed the meeting about the convictions awarded by the courts to the criminals during May 2014 and added 34 different convictions have been awarded to the criminals of heinous crime and the Anti Terrorist Court awarded 22 convictions under the Arms Act.
