Stay within your ‘limits’
* Mamnoon tells state institutions to work within ambit of law as they may not have ‘likes and dislikes’ while performing their functions
By Tanveer AhmedISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain on Monday ‘advised’ all the state institutions to work within the ambit of law as ‘they may not have political likes and dislikes’ while performing their functions.
“In Pakistan, supremacy of constitution and progress of democracy have become inter dependent and solution for all the problems has to be sought while remaining within the established constitutional framework”, Mamnoon told the joint sitting of the parliament in his first address after being elected as president. The nation fully realises that cooperation and understanding among state institutions is critically needed at this juncture of time. “At a time when our enemies are actively working to create conflict and discord among us, we need to maintain unity and confidence among our lines,” he believed. “Let us pledge that we will further promote cooperation and unity among the state institutions. Their stability is the stability of the state,” he said.
The president focused most of the time on the achievements of the PML-N government by praising it for doing ‘wonders’ in the last one year with nothing at all to pinpoint as shortcoming in the working of the government.
Overall environment during the address remained calm and peaceful. Opposition parties of Senate boycotted the address to protest continued absence of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from the Upper House.
The president, who spoke in Urdu language in contrast to the past tradition of addressing the joint sitting in English language, was all praise for the armed forces of Pakistan over sacrifices they made not only for defending and protecting borders of the country but also maintaining the internal security.
Mamnoon called upon the media to realise its responsibilities and boundaries. He, however, categorically stated that government didn’t believe in any restriction on media. He advised the media to formulate their own code of conduct for smooth functioning in future.
Speaking about the scourge of terrorism and extremism, Mamnoon said elimination of both the menaces was critical for the prosperity of the country. He said that government chose the option of dialogue only to resolve these issues.
About external relations, Mamnnon said that Pakistan is ready to promote friendly and constructive relationship with new leadership of India and Afghanistan. He termed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s recent visit to India a move that has been appreciated worldwide.
Mamnoon said the economic growth was encouraging and Pakistan was heading towards financial stability. He said this firmness had opened the door of business activities in the country.
