Sri Lankan students get Jinnah scholarship
Educational scholarship awarded on merit, financial assistanceCOLOMBO – The government of Pakistan has awarded two million Lankan rupees worth of educational scholarships to 71 students of O/L and A/L and 12 promising working journalists under the second phase of the Jinnah Scholarship Programme 2014.
The ceremony to award the Jinnah Educational Scholarship 2014 was held at Ananda College in Colombo under the auspices of the High Commission of Pakistan. Senior Minister of Urban Affairs AHM Fowzie was the chief guest on the occasion, which was also attended by High Commissioner of Pakistan Qasim Qureshi.
The event was also attended by a large number of students and their families along with the Pakistan High Commission officials, dignitaries and a large section of media. The first phase of award of scholarships was held on June 5, 2014 at the Jinnah Hall, Kandy in which 1.7 million Lankan rupees worth of educational scholarships were offered to 69 bright students.
The scholarships are awarded on the basis of a strict criteria involving merit and need for financial assistance. Under this programme, each successful student receives stipend of 24,000 Lankan rupees as assistance for one-year to follow their studies.
A unique feature of this year’s scholarships was the award of scholarships to 12 promising working journalists for pursuing one-year diploma programme in journalism from the Colombo University. The journalists were selected on the recommendations of the Colombo University.
