Special court summons PM’s letter in Musharraf case
By Amir Jalil BobraISLAMABAD: The special court trying former military dictator Pervez Musharraf for high treason, on Tuesday directed the interior secretary to produce the original letter of the prime minister which called for investigating and initiating a treason trial against Musharraf. A three-member bench of the special court headed by Justice Faisal Arab, and whose other members are justices Yawar Ali and Tahira Safdar, heard the treason trial case. During the hearing of the case defence lawyer Barrister Faroogh Nasim pleaded the court that the documents provided to him by the prosecution were incomplete and raised the objection that the complaint of the case did not have the name of the complainant. He said the prosecution has not provided him the list of witnesses and termed it a violation of the court orders. Nasim pleaded the court that the interior secretary is the complainant of the high treason trial case against his client and requested the court to allow the defence lawyers to cross-question him. He added if the prosecution thinks that the secretary interior is not the witness then the complaint should be dismissed. The defence lawyer asked the court to permit submission of an application for the additional documents required, saying without these documents the defence side is facing difficulties in pursuing the treason trial.Chief prosecutor Akram Sheikh appeared before the court and pleaded that the interior secretary is only the complainant of the case and not a witness and his statement is just limited to the complaint. However, Justice Faisal Arab remarked that the prosecution is using delaying tactics in the case. After an interval the case hearing resumed and interior secretary appeared before the court to record his statement and submitted that on June 23, 2013 a letter from prime minister was received bearing the instruction to investigate and initiate a treason trial against Musharraf. The court demanded the letter and he presented a photocopy of it. The court directed the original letter be presented today (Wednesday).
