Oath to be upheld if judiciary’s freedom put at stake: CJ

MULTAN: Chief Justice of Pakistan Tassaduq Hussain Jillani has said the provision of justice is not easy, rather it is a bed of thorns and vowed that the judges would uphold their oath as SC judges if the independence of the judiciary were put at stake.

He said this while addressing a crowded gathering at the Multan Bar on Saturday, with Multan District Bar Association President Sher Zaman Qureshi in the chair.

He said, “the provision of justice is a noble service and a moment of justice is better than thousands of nights of worship.”

The chief justice hoped that the bars would play their role in keeping intact the independence of the judiciary and supremacy of the Constitution.

Tassadduq Hussain Jillani said that the lawyers, civil society and the media had written an unforgettable history for the independence of the judiciary.

He said, “the provision of justice is worship.”

The CJP said that the role of the media, civil society and lawyers was a golden chapter in the history of the independent judiciary. “I never said that I have never made mistakes, but I try to avoid making them again,” he said.

The chief justice was of the view that the fear of Allah had been enhanced in him since he assumed the office of CJ.

“If ever the independence of the judiciary is breached, the lawyers will play their role and the judiciary will uphold the Constitution.”

He urged the young lawyers to work hard and provide justice to the people because the judiciary was the only institution on which they relied.

The CJ said that the Supreme Court would abide by its oath to uphold the supremacy of the Constitution.

Appreciating the commitment expressed by the participants for the supremacy of law, the chief justice termed it a good omen and said that it would help ensure the supremacy of the Constitution and law in the country.

The chief justice also lauded the Multan Bar for its services rendered for the independence of the judiciary, supremacy of law and justice.

“Alive nations always remember their seniors and personalities,” he commented.

The CJ said the bench and bar were on the same page with regard to the provision of justice.

He said the Multan Bar had played a vital role in the restoration of the judiciary in 2007, which resulted in the independence of the judiciary and strengthening of democracy.

“If we want a prosperous Pakistan, we have to respect institutions,” the chief justice maintained.

He said it was pleasing that the rate of disposal of cases by the Multan Bench was the highest compared to that of other benches of the Lahore High Court (LHC).

Speaking on the occasion, LHC Chief Justice Khawaja Imtiaz Ahmed said the Supreme Court was not just a court, but a symbol of the federation. Multan District Bar Association President Sher Zaman Qureshi presented his welcome address.

A large number of judges from high courts, district and session courts, civil courts, judicial administration and lawyers attended the ceremony.

Earlier, Chief Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jillani arrived here on a two-day visit on Friday.

He visited the home of his cousin, Syed Zahid Hussain Jillani whose son, Umar Jilani, a secret agency official was kidnapped. RPO Amjad Javed Salimi apprised him of the steps being taken by the police for his recovery.
