Intolerance a major threat to democracy, rule of law: CJP
Justice Jillani asks people to restore their faith in judicial systemLAHORE – Chief Justice Pakistan Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani said on Saturday that the real threat to democracy and the rule of law in Pakistan stems from intolerance.
Addressing a function organised by the Supreme Court Bar in the honour of Justice Umer Atta Bandial here, the chief justice said that activities of non-state actors – who were trampling down law – and less confidence of people into judicial system was also increasing intolerance.
“The democracy cannot survive without tolerance,” he said. He hoped that the judiciary would take measures to provide speedy justice to the people and would respect their oath. “Survival of democracy is only possible with timely provision of justice,” he said.
The chief justice asked people to restore their faith in the judicial system, and said that the judiciary would take measures to provide speedy justice to them and would respect their oath to law and the constitution.
Justice Jillani said that independence of the judiciary could not only be achieved through what was written in the constitution and it was essential to restore the trust of people in the justice system. “It is required that authority of law and supremacy of constitution be established in Pakistan,” he said.
